YOUNGSTOWN - A stretch of a usually busy road on the YSU campus will be closing for a month and a half.

City officials have announced that Fifth Avenue, between East Bound Service Road and Arlington Street, will be closed to through traffic for 45 days, beginning Friday, October 16, 2020. The road will be closed for full-depth pavement replacement and crosswalk construction.

The section of closed road runs from just north of Stambaugh Stadium to just north of M60 Parking Deck.

The city says the best detour includes taking Wick Ave. for through traffic and Belmont Ave. for local traffic.

Chuck Shasho, Youngstown Deputy Director of Public Works, said YSU's remote schedule helps out traffic and believe now is a good time to close the road.

"We want to get this done before football starts in May," Shasho said. "That's why we're trying to get this done before winter. The fastest way to do this is with the road closed."

Shasho said the city plans to complete the road construction within that 45 day period.
