CHAMPION TWP., Ohio - Champion Township's Fire Chief, John Hickey, posted an update to the departments Facebook Page asking the public to take action based on the recommendation of EMS staff during a time in which EMS services are stretched extremely thin.

Chief Hickey said, "For the past 3 weeks we have seen a large increase in our COVID-19 presumptive cases and transports to our local emergency departments. We understand that there are many theories and opinions about this pandemic, but I can assure you that the threat is real and our hospital system is overwhelmed with new cases being transported to them every day."

With an increase in call volume and presumptive COVID-19 cases EMS staff must take extra steps and precautions to protect their own safety

"Please understand that there may be times where we respond to you in your time of need, and after evaluating you or your loved one, our staff may recommend that you NOT be transported to the local ED for your own safety. If the EMS staff feels that your symptoms do not warrant a trip to the emergency department at this time, they will advise you of that."

Chief Hickey explains that EMS staff are experienced in this area and are looking out for everyone during this time.

"We are not doing this because we think 'you are not that sick,' we just know what the risk is currently and we only have your best interest in mind. The resources at the local emergency departments are thin right now, and sometimes we can recommend simple treatments at home until you can get an appointment with your primary physician."

Chief Hickey asks the public to take advantage of information listed on the Trumbull County Board of Health website at www.tcbh.org for more information about symptoms and other information concerning COVID-19.

"Stay safe and know that your fire department is here for you 24/7."
