The Canfield Police Department’s new K9 helped investigators discover nearly seven pounds of cocaine mailed to a home on Youngstown’s West Side.

According to an affidavit made public this week, a letter carrier brought a Priority Mail package from San Juan, Puerto Rico to the post office’s Main Processing Center in Youngstown last month because no one was living at the Manhattan Avenue home to which it was addressed.

A postal inspector became suspicious and after some research, found that both the names of the sender and recipient on the package were fictitious.

Canfield Patrolman Aaron Young and his narcotic detecting K9 Nix were brought in to inspect the package which had been placed in a lineup with several other packages.

After Nix gave an indication that narcotics may be in the undelivered package, the postal inspector obtained a search warrant to find out what was inside.

According to court documents, agents found 3,095 grams of cocaine, which is equivalent to 6.8 pounds.

Filings in U.S. District Court do not indicate if authorities have charged the person who sent the package, or its intended recipient.

Detecting the cocaine was one of the first accomplishments by Nix.  He and Patrolman Young just completed training and certification less than a month before the discovery.
