YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Multiple companies have made donations to the Youngstown City School District during the holiday season.

Area fraternal order of police lodges donated $500 worth of gift cards to each of the 72 YCSD families in the district.

Rev. Dr. William C. King Jr. of Price Memorial AME Zion Church; Ruthie King, Rev. King's wife; and local entrepreneur Corey Kemp donated 40 $50 gift cards to help YCSD families this holiday.

Mahoning County commissioners also allocated $200,000 in federal CARES Act money to families.

The recipients of the gift cards were selected by parent-engagement coordinators who know which families need help the most.

The Junior Civic League of Youngstown also donated $25 Walmart gift cards to Volney Rogers eighth graders.

Sarah Lett, a social worker at Chaney High School, was able to secure Christmas gifts for students.

Another organization, 1-888-OHIOCOMP, donated 150 $20 Walmart gift cards at Thanksgiving to district families.

"We're so grateful to all of these people and organizations for thinking of our scholars and helping our families," said CEO Justin Jennings. "The pandemic has made this a year like no other and the holidays have put even more strain on many people. These donations have helped to ease some of that strain and for that, I am forever thankful."
