No evidence of hate crime so far in woman's killing in New Wilmington

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - As of now, Pennsylvania State Police say there is no evidence to suggest that a transgender woman's killing in New Wilmington was a hate crime.
State police stress the investigation continues into the motive behind the killing of 24-year-old Chyna Cardena.
On Feb. 18, officials responded to a 911 call at a home on South New Castle Street.
Officials say they found 33-year-old Juan Carter Hernandez assaulting Cardena with what they described as a blunt instrument. Police told the suspect to stop, and he refused. That's when an officer shot Hernandez, according to officials.
Hernandez died on the scene. Cardena was taken to the hospital where she later died from her injuries.
State police are still trying to piece together a motive behind the killing. They say Cardena and Hernandez did know each other.
