YOUNGSTOWN -  Police have charged a Youngstown man in connection with a crash that took the life of former YSU football player Darius Shackleford last month.

Charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and hit-skip, both felonies, have been filed in Youngstown Municipal Court against 19-year-old Adriene Washington.

Investigators say that on February 6, Washington was driving a car being chased on the city’s East Side for running a red light.

According to police, Washington and a 17-year-old juvenile were in a car that fled north on Albert Street, near the Himrod Expressway.

Police say as the officer turned around and activated his lights, the car fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

Washington's vehicle ran a second red light at Albert and McGuffey, hitting Shackleford's car in the intersection, according to police.

Investigators say Washington fled on foot and was later apprehended. The 17-year-old passenger did not flee the scene.

The Youngstown Police Department internal affairs department is conducting an administrative investigation to ensure all proper policies and procedures were followed in the case.
