POLAND, Ohio - Poland School Board Members have a couple of choices when it comes to the future of the North Elementary building.

They can decide to save money and demolish the building to avoid a $4,000 a month utility bill or repurpose the building.

Two groups discussed plans they have for the building at a meeting Monday evening.

Some community leaders want time to come up with a written plan and raise funds to build a community center and playground.

Another group wants to lease the old school building for an alternative school for kids no longer allowed at their home school called Mahoning County High School.

Sam Moffie of Poland said the community center would be great for the area.

"We need that in Poland Village because we do not have a lot of attractions for young people, young families, and seniors. This would be perfect," said Moffie.

Jennifer Merritt, Mahoning County High School Superintendent, says being a part of a community is critical to their students and a community learning model would fit the situation.

The board had been ready to seek bids for demolition of the school, but will now wait until the proposals are officially filed to make a decision.
