AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - With warmer weather and work returning to normal, road construction seems like it's at an all-time high in the Mahoning Valley.

A paving project that's going on in areas of Mahoning Avenue has caused some temporary delays and some have asked, why can't work be done in the evening when there is less traffic?

21 News went to Mahoning County Engineer Pat Ginnetti for answers.

He said not only are roads like Mahoning Avenue not safe at night, but it's a safety issue.

"Driving through these constructions zones in the evenings when it's dark, they would have construction lights that are extremely bright, they're lower to the ground. Often time it causes a lot of glare they and you can't see the workers if they're coming in and out, you can't see the trucks sometimes," said Pat Ginnetti.

Ginnetti adds that their work is very different than ODOT because state routes and interstates have more lights to help them aid in working at night.

He said they did discuss nighttime work with ODOT, but it wasn't feasible and he believes the temporary headache will ease up soon and asks for patience so both drivers and workers are safe.

"I always caution people regardless of how big the construction zone or how big the project is to slow down, be patient, it's a temporary thing. There's a lot of people working on this project, and all these people want to return home every night to their families," said Ginnetti.

He also warned people not to be on their phones while going through construction zones because there could be a lot of movement going on involving equipment and any distraction could end in catastrophe.

Ginnetti said they are done with grinding parts of Mahoning Avenue and are on to paving now, so there will be about two to three days of inconvenience for drivers.

The project in Austintown is expected to be completed in September.
