One year after announcing plans to rebrand Aunt Jemima pancake mix and syrup, the newly renamed Pearl Milling products are showing up on store shelves according to national media reports.

Pearl Milling Company-branded pancake mixes, syrups, cornmeal, flour, and grits products are now being sold without the familiar image of an African American woman who became known as Aunt Jemima.

Criticism that the name and image reinforced racial stereotypes reached a pitch during the furor over the murder of George Floyd by a white policeman in Minneapolis last year.

Quaker Oats first deleted the image of Aunt Jemima and has now changed the name of their products as well to Pearl Milling and pledged a $5 million commitment to support the Black community.

“Quaker worked with consumers, employees, external cultural and subject-matter experts, and diverse agency partners to gather broad perspectives and ensure the new brand was developed with inclusivity in mind,” according to a news release from the company.
