How dangerous is your job?

For those who work on the side of busy highways, all it takes is a second for distracted driver to hit someone who was just trying to make a living by keeping our roads smooth and safe.

ODOT wants to remind drivers that the "Move Over, Slow Down Law" is very important. It requires you to move into the other lane if possible if you see workers on the side of the road.

In Ohio, the move over, slow down law means when see you any vehicle with flashing lights on the side of the road you are required to move over a lane and slow down.

ODOT workers 21 News talked to say, even though the law has been around for over a decade, 30% of drivers still aren't doing it.
And you can guess what the main distraction for them is.

"Honest to God it's the cell phones! Just now we were flagging and you don't know how many people were looking down on their phones as they keep looking up," said ODOT worker, Michael Valko.

If you talk to any ODOT worker they will tell you they've had one too many close calls and they all know someone who has been hurt or even killed while on duty.

"We are at 80 ODOT crews that have been struck. Last year there were 125 so we are on pace to surpass that. That is a number we do not want to surpass," said ODOT Dist. 4 spokesperson, Ray Marsch.

If you can't move over because of traffic, you are asked to at least slow down and give as much space as you can.

Sometimes police are in these construction areas and if they catch you not following the law, expect to pay double fines.
