The Mahoning County Sheriff's Office lost one of their own Monday.

Deputy Edward Mitchell passed away on October 18th from complications related to COVID-19.

Mitchell was hired by the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office in late 1992.

Sheriff Jerry Greene told 21 News that he and Mitchell joined the force around the same time and said he was an exceptional deputy.

"He was a great deputy and a great friend. He always had a smile on his face," Sheriff Greene said.

Mitchell had been with the department for almost 30 years at the time of his passing.

"Everyone with the Sheriff's Office is truly heartbroken. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family," Greene said.
