Mahoning Valley - In the midst of the holiday celebrations, you may be looking for a rapid COVID-19 test before the new year.

This comes as Dr. Anthony Fauci announced Monday Americans should not attend large New Year's Eve parties where they do not know the vaccination status of others.

The Youngstown Health Department is giving out 4,000 free Rapid COVID tests Wednesday, December 29th at 8 a.m. at the Covelli Centre.

The first 1,000 cars will get four tests each.

Each kit will have two tests per kit and will be rapid Binax NOW tests, giving results in about 15 minutes.

Previously, this distribution was supposed to be at the Eugina Atkinson center, but because of heavy traffic, they're shifting to Covelli.

Youngstown City Health District Commissioner Erin Bishop said she hopes the city can get an additional shipment in for tests in the coming days, but currently, the only upcoming distribution scheduled is for Wednesday.

If you can't get a test there, you have a shot at finding a rapid test at a local pharmacy or grocery store ranging in price from $15 to about $30 dollars, but many across the Valley are reporting they are sold out.

While local pharmacies and departments said they could be getting more shipments in the near future, they are unsure when. Walmart in Boardman said it's possible they receive more tests in the coming days, and it's best to check their location in the mornings when they receive shipments.

The Youngstown Health Department said you can also try calling your doctor to see if they can get you scheduled for a COVID test.

Bishop reminds people if you do test positive with a non-proctored at-home test, it's your job to self-report to the county health department and let your family and friends know you COVID.

The Youngstown Health Department said they've gotten under 50 calls this past week of people reporting a positive rapid test.

"It's important so we can get it into our system, but the biggest thing is to do your own contact tracing," Bishop said, "To be honest and open with your family."

If you're not feeling well and cannot get a COVID test, health officials are urging you to stay home whether you think it's COVID or not. If you test positive and you've been around someone who is unvaccinated, they should stay home.
