New PA Turnpike 5% toll increase goes into effect Sunday

Pennsylvania - Pennsylvania drivers will begin seeing the impacts of a new turnpike toll increase starting this weekend.
Toll prices will go up at a 5% rate beginning on January 2. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission said that the increase will impact all drivers regardless if they pay their rates by E-ZPass or Toll by Plate.
The entire system will see the increase except for PA Turnpike 576, located west of Pittsburgh.
PTC claimed the following rate increases:
-Passenger vehicle rates will increase from $1.60 to $1.70 for E-ZPass customers and from $3.90 to $4.10 for Toll By Plate customers.
-Class-5 tractor trailer will increase from $13 to $13.70 for E-ZPass customers and from $26.60 to $28 for Toll By Plate customers.
Pennsylvania Drivers will be able to access and pay their fees on the PA Toll Pay app on their smartphone.
The Turnpike Commission said that the rates must continue increasing to repay their debt incurred from borrowing nearly $8 billion. It is forecasted that future toll increases of 5% from through 2025, 4% in 2026, 3.5% in 2027, then 3% annually from 2028 to 2050.
The 5% rate for 2022 is the first time since 2016 that the annual toll increase was not raised by at least 6%.
