Valley Congressman and U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Ryan is calling on President Biden to provide American-made N-95 masks to all U.S. households.

In a letter to the White House, Ryan and Michigan Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin called on the President to provide the masks to those requesting them.

“In the middle of a surging Omicron variant, it’s unacceptable that we have high-quality American-made masks and PPE collecting dust on our shelves while China and other countries line their pockets with sales from American consumers,” Congressman Ryan said. “I’m asking President Biden to use the resources already allocated by Congress for COVID-19 related expenses to purchase and distribute these American-made, quality certified masks, to every household that requests them. This can be done in conjunction with the Administration’s reported plan to mail at-home test kits to American households.”

The letter states that while there are foreign-made masks that have received FDA authorization or NIOSH certification, Ryan says there are concerns about counterfeiting and quality controls when purchasing such face coverings from abroad.

The CDC estimates that as many as 60% of KN95 masks coming from China are counterfeit, according to Ryan.

Ryan is also asking for more transparency about the effectiveness and concerns for foreign-made Personal Protective Equipment.
