OSRC looking into horse death linked to Hollywood Gaming

An investigation is underway after a thoroughbred horse had to be euthanized after racing at the Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course earlier this week.
The horse allegedly broke her leg after racing in freezing conditions. The Ohio State Racing Commission is looking into the matter.
"We haven't had the chance to sit down and actually discuss everything yet with all the parties concerned. I imagine that's probably going to be happening sometime early next week.", said Chris Dragone, executive director with the Ohio State Racing Commission.
Chris adds Hollywood Gaming has been very forthcoming and extremely cooperative. The situation garnered national attention as PETA is also involved in the matter.
"We're really concerned that this really hard ground is part of the reason horses may be breaking bones on that track.", said Kathy Guillermo, senior Vice President with PETA.
Aside from an independent investigation already taking place at Mahoning Valley Race Course, which happens anytime a fatality happens at the track, the Ohio State Racing Commission is in the early stages of filling in the blanks.
"We have nothing right now that indicates there was anything wrong with the track or the horses.", Dragone said. "We've looked at the vet records for the horse, and we've looked at the track conditions and there was nothing really out of the ordinary. There were no complaints from the horsemen's group regarding the track surface.", he added.
This news comes in the wake of other fatalities at the track.
"We've been watching what's happening at Mahoning.", Kathy adds. "This is the third horse to die in January."
"I think there is a general concern, and we're taking a look at everything.", Chris says.
21 News reached out to Hollywood Gaming for comment but have not heard back, however they issued this statement Wednesday night.
"On matters like this, we will work with the Ohio Horse Racing Commission should they have any requests for additional information."
