In a life-long battle against animal abuse and neglect, the city of Struthers is looking into a potential limit on the number of pets per household

"We've had a couple incidents in the city of Struthers where we're discovered a large amount of dogs in a house.", said safety service director Rob Benson.

The latest an investigation into a Frank Street home following the death of one dog, only to uncover seven dogs, a cat, and an iguana, all in unlivable conditions.

It's prompted discussion between city officials and the Animal Humane Society of Mahoning County about a potential limit on the number of pets per household.

"The ordinance that they're trying to pass in Struthers is to protect these animals that we're ending up going and rescuing.", says Jane MacMurchy of the Animal Humane Society.

When asked how many times the organization sees cases of homes with too many animals

"Every week, sometimes multiple times per week.", she added

The main goal isn't to punish pet owners, but to ensure the safety of the animals

"We're not looking to remove you're animals, that's not what this is about, this is for the houses that have 20 animals that are living in feces.", added MacMurchy.

Details on possible fines, and the number of pets are still being worked out with a final decision coming from the council.
