Drivers across the country are experiencing the most expensive gas prices since 2014. That's why AAA East Central is offering tips for drivers to conserve fuel and in turn save money.

AAA East Central's Director of Public Affairs, Jim Garrity says the easiest and most effective way to conserve fuel is to modify your driving habits such as your speed.

"One of the simplest ways to keep your fuel costs lower is to slow down, as speeding drastically decreases how efficiently your vehicle burns fuel," Garrity said.

AAA East Central offered the following tips on how to conserve fuel on your daily commute:

- Slow down and drive the speed limit. On the highway, aerodynamic drag causes fuel economy to drop off significantly as speeds increase above 50 mph.

- Reduce trips, lighten your load and limit the amount of cargo in your vehicle whenever possible. Combine errands and aim to get all your errands done on one day of the week. Also consider using the more fuel efficient vehicle in your household more often.

- Avoid "jackrabbit" starts and hard acceleration, as these action greatly increase fuel consumption. Accelerate smoothly with light to moderate throttle allowing the automatic transmission to upshift into higher gears sooner, reducing engine RPM and saving fuel.

- Avoid extended idling to warm up the engine, as even in winter, idling and warming up an engine are unnecessary and a waste of fuel.

- When approaching a red light or stop sign, take your foot off the gas early and allow your car to coast down to a slower speed until it's time to brake.

- Use cruise control to help maintain a constant speed and save fuel. However, don't use it on wet roads, as you could lose control of your vehicle.

- Take advantage of fuel savings programs. AAA members have access to savings when filling up at any Shell gas station. More information on these fuel perks can be found here.

- Maintain your vehicle according to manufacturer recommendations. Regular maintenance ensures optimum fuel economy, performance and longevity.

- Take your vehicle to a trusted repair facility as soon as possible if your "check engine" light comes on.
