YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - On Saturday morning, students from 51 area schools competed in the 89th Annual 21 WFMJ Regional Spelling Bee.

The 51 school champions competed at Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown.

They competed for a chance to be one of the two Grand Champions that will represent the Mahoning Valley at the 95th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee during Memorial Day weekend in Washington, D.C.

The two champions are Joey Constantine, a 6th-grader from Lakeview Middle School, and Christopher Dominick, an 8th-grader from Struthers Middle School.

Zachary Shahan, an 8th-grader from Southington Middle School, came in second place, followed by T.E.A.C.H. 5th-grader Philip Gleason in third and Brookfield Middle 6th-grader Makenzie Johnson in fourth place.

Each contestant received a Merriam-Webster dictionary, a 21 WFMJ Spelling Bee T-Shirt, and a school champion certificate.

Kent State Trumbull Campus is also giving $2,000 scholarships to each of the champions, a $1,000 scholarship to the runner-up, and a $500 scholarship to third and fourth place students.

The 89th Annual 21 WFMJ Regional Spelling Bee was held in memory and honor of Betty Brown Jagnow, former publisher of The Vindicator and President of 21 WFMJ.
