NILES, Ohio - Plans to demolish the old Niles City pool has moved one step further.

Mayor Niles Steven Mientkiwicz said council has approved demolition plans of the pool and pool building at Waddell Park. The pool has been closed since 2014.

The next step is a vote by the Trumbull County Council of Governments who will share county services to help get the job done, and then final approval of the partnership by Trumbull County Commissioners.

The estimated cost is $25,000. The city planned the demolition as part of their 2022 budget, however the mayor said the final cost may be less.

"At the end of the day we retain the scrap (metal) value, so that scrap value does help us off set that $25,000 cost," said Mientkiwicz.

The goal is to have the pool demolished by the end of June.

Plans are to eventually put in a splash pad at the location. The park board is currently looking to find a design firm to design and determine a cost estimate for the splash pad. The goal is to break ground in 2023.
