People in Struthers are frustrated over hard tap water in their homes that is coming from the city's system, operate by Aqua Ohio.

One resident, Patty Divencenzo, has been living in her Struthers home for over 20 years now with her husband and says there have been issues since the couple moved in.

"Even the people that we bought this house off of said [to] be prepared to change out the faucets every four, five, six years, because of the corrosion," Divencenzo said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hard water is corrosive to the materials that are used in older homes, like Divencenzo's.

"We're constantly buying stuff to help," she said. "You just have to live with it because that's the way the water is."

She says the hard water has left her clean dishes with spots on them. She has also noticed mineral buildups on faucets, shower heads, and in her dog's food bowl. Divencenzo also says doing laundry with hard water has dulled her clothes.

She's not alone. Divencenzo showed 21 News a social media post garnering nearly 60 comments from frustrated Struthers residents.

"Everyone talks about it. It's always been an ongoing joke about Struthers's water," she said.

While it may be a joke for some, others commenting on that social media post raised concerns about the safety of the hard water.

Aqua Ohio spokesman Jeff La Rue says the water doesn't pose any dangers to those using and drinking it.

"In fact, there's some research that indicates harder water is better for you," La Rue said.

If someone consumes too soft water, it may strip the natural minerals in their body away from them, which La Rue says can have very serious health consequences.

"We find that that level of softness is a good balance," he said. "[In] the grand scheme of things, [it's] a little on the harder side."

La Rue said the issues are more along the lines of aesthetic issues rather than issues posing any serious consequences. He added, if you're an Aqua Ohio customers with concerns, you can call its customer service line.
