Salem is promoting the community's health with its first Health and Wellness Fair occurring at the Salem City Health District on Saturday, May 21 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Twenty-eight health and wellness vendors will provide activities for all ages which will help visitors "take steps towards a better lifestyle," according to the SCHD press release.

The free event, mainly organized by the SCHD's Director of Nursing Kristin Toy, will provide access to blood pressure and pulse oximetry screenings, BMI measurements, ear exams and more. Physicians will be available to answer general questions.

After visiting a vendor, participants will receive a voucher for the raffle baskets donated by local businesses.

Alanna Stainbrook, public health commissioner at SCHD, said vaccines for Hepatitis A, Influenza and COVID-19 will be available.

Salem's Fire Department will bring their new fire truck and ambulance, and the City Police Department will be accompanied by K9 Simon, who will perform his exercise routines. The Ohio State Police will also host a distracted driving simulator.

Posters submitted by high school students for the poster contest focused on vaping prevention, safe driving, teen mental health and healthy diets will be displayed. The winner of the contest will receive a $100 Amazon gift card.

Children can participate in the event too by becoming a "HEALTH HERO" which includes activities such as picking foods from MyPlate food groups, exercising and learning the proper way to wash their hands. Mayor John Berlin will give certificates to participants who complete these events.

Another event for children is the Bike Safety Rodeo which will focus on general bike safety such as crossing roads and intersections. Free helmets, provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics, will be given to any participant who doesn't have one while supplies lasts.

During the event, allies near the Kent State City Center will be closed, and parking will be available at Salem Visiting Nurses Association and on the streets.

Chic-fil-a, Antones and Quaker Nutrition will have lunches available for purchase.
