AAA predicts nearly 40-million people will travel this Memorial Day Weekend.

That's an increase compared to last year, and you may wonder how that is with astronomical gas prices and inflation?

It turns out people who do opt in to take a trip this weekend are budgeting more now than they were, according to a survey done by AAA.

This weekend marks the unofficial start of summer and AAA projects an over 8% increase in those hitting the road and reports air travel is up 25% since last year, but this comes as gas hits $4.47 a gallon in Youngstown on top of the other rising costs amid inflation.

"Consumers said it was somewhere around that four dollar mark that they would start making changes to their daily habits so that they could prioritize things like a road trip, travel to see family and friends they haven't seen in a couple of years," Jim Garrity, AAA Director of Public Affairs East Central region, said.

Garrity said after time away from family, more people are prioritizing travel more this ear by setting more money aside.

He said travel is personal to everyone, and it's best to plan ahead financially before taking off.

"You look at where you're going, you run the numbers, and you make sure that you have the money," he said, "because you don't want to find yourself in a position where you're coming up short on your gasoline budget because you didn't adequately know what you were walking into."

He said one way to prepare ahead of time and budget properly is to calculate the amount of gas money you will spend on the trip.

You can do that here.
