Detectives are investigating after a woman was shot on Youngstown’s South Side late Wednesday.

Police and an ambulance were called to the 2000 block of South Heights Avenue at around 8:30 p.m.

Officers say the incident was a domestic situation between a man and his mother.

The man told police that he picked up his daughter from his mother's house and went back to his home on Mistletoe Avenue.

Reports say the mother drove to the Mistletoe Avenue home and began yelling at him because he did not have permission to get his daughter.

When he told her to leave his home, his mother allegedly grabbed a gun and pushed it up to his forehead.

According to the report, a struggle ensued and the two fumbled for the gun, causing it to go off twice.

After the gun went off, the mother drove back to her home where officers found blood on the front porch.

Officers found the wounded woman at the South Heights Avenue home but learned that the victim had driven three miles away from Mistletoe Avenue.

Investigators say neighbors confirmed the man's story and claimed that the mother was the one who started the incident.

The woman was found to have been shot in the right side of her chest and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

She is in stable condition.
