ABERDEEN, Maryland -  An Austintown who police say severely burned himself when a homemade firework went off in his SUV has been indicted.

The Mahoning County Grand Jury on Thursday handed up a two-count indictment on Thursday charging 39-year-old David Sletvold with illegal manufacture or processing of explosives and possession of dangerous explosives

According to an Austintown Police report, an officer pulled over Sletvold’s SUV for a traffic violation and noticed that he had severe burns on his face, hands, and clothing. Police also said the SUV's dashboard and window were covered by black dust and fluid.

When asked what happened, Sletvold told police that he used black powder and a candle wick to create a firework.

Sletvold says the firework exploded when he lit a cigarette.

Police say they found black powder throughout the SUV and a tank of gasoline in the trunk.
