Phantom Fireworks won’t start offering sports betting at Youngstown’s Covelli Centre on January 1st, but plans are still in the works to bring betting to the venue sometime next year according to a Phantom representative.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission on Wednesday will consider approving sports betting licenses.  A license request from Phantom is not among those on the agenda.

Phantom Vice President Bill Weimer tells 21 News that his organization is still working with a consultant before submitting its license request to the commission.

Weimer says that Phantom does not plan to begin sports betting at Covelli on the first of next year when other venues around the state will legally be allowed to do so.

Phantom is required to give the Casino Control Commission a sixty-day notice before they begin offering sports betting. Weimer said he has no date for when that will happen.

Last month the commission approved a Type A and Type B license for Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Racecourse in Austintown.

A Type A license allows the holder to offer sports gaming via a computer website or mobile application.

The Type B license would allow Hollywood Gaming to offer sports gaming at the Austintown location.

Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley's website is promoting a coming partnership with Barstool Sportsbook that would allow bets to be placed at the venue on Route 46 or through Barstool's App.
