1997: Forty-three Youngstown area women made a bus trip to Philadelphia to join the Million Woman March.
Youngstown State University's overall crime rate ranked lowest among Ohio's four-year schools in the uniform crime report issued by the FBI.
Mahoning County commissioners say they will hold the first of their traveling meetings in Sebring.
1982: Nearly 1,000 seats at Stambaugh Stadium were damaged by exuberant fans standing and jumping on them during high school football games and will be unusable until repaired. University officials contend brackets supporting the seats are deficient.
Casey Mitchell, 10, a student in a class for the visually impaired at Taft School in Youngstown, becomes the first person to access the talking encyclopedia service launched by the Youngstown Society for the Blind. It is the first such service in the United States. She placed her call from Mayor George Vukovich's office and asked for information about Christopher Columbus for a school project.
The second-half Vindicator straw poll indicates that Richard F. Celeste, Democratic candidate for governor, will easily carry Trumbull County over Republican Clarence Brown, perhaps by as much as 25,000 votes.
