AUSTINTOWN TWP., Ohio -  A 24-year-old Austintown woman faces charges following an encounter with township police early Thursday.

A police officer says he began following an SUV that allegedly ran a red light at Mahoning Avenue and Raccoon Road. Police say the driver was yelling at the officer and honking the SUV’s horn at the time.

When the car stopped Mahoning Avenue and Idaho Road, the officer said there were two women in the car.

According to the police report, both women were yelling at the officer saying that he didn’t help her when she called.

Police say that the driver, Mersades Moats, had called the police department earlier from an Austintown bar, but hung up.

The report said Moats tried unsuccessfully to prevent the officer from removing the keys from the SUVs ignition.

Saying Moats refused to get out of the car, the officer pulled her out.

That’s when, according to the report, Moats began swinging her arms attempting to hit the officers who held her against the SUV in order to place her in handcuffs. Her passenger was released.

Once at the township police headquarters, police say Moats refused to submit to a breath test and declined to explain how she received a bruise over her right eye.

The report says as Moats was being transported to the county jail, she kicked the cruiser window and was allegedly combative with deputies once she arrived downtown.

Moats faces a court hearing next week on charges of OVI, resisting arrest, and running a red light.
