WARREN, Ohio - A Warren Council meeting set to discuss creating a charter government in the city has been cancelled.

A special meeting with Warren City Council was originally set to be held Thursday evening to vote on putting the issue on the ballot in May, but that meeting was delayed until Wednesday, January 25 during a regular council meeting.

Warren Deserves Better, a citizen led group has been petitioning for the city to adopt a charter form of government, where voters would approve a document similar to a constitution for the city.

Warren council member Ken Macpherson believes that the council is purposely trying to delay the vote, and that this delay is a perfect example of why the city needs a charter government.

According to Tina Milner of Warren Deserves Better, council claims the meeting was canceled due to conflicting schedules of the council members. Milner believes the vote will pass at the regular council meeting on Wednesday.

Under Ohio law, the council vote is mainly symbolic, since the petition has already received enough votes to put it on the ballot.

"I don't think council understands their job, and I hope they are not trying to dismiss the will of the voters," said Milner.

Council needs to pass this ordinance by February 1, and if they fail to do so, citizens plan to file in court.
