The East Palestine Police Department is alerting its citizens to be aware of anyone randomly phoning residents' homes or going door-to-door seeking personal information claiming to be with Norfolk Southern.

East Palestine police told 21 News they had recently learned of the issue and if you are contacted by anyone claiming they are with the railroad, contact the East Palestine police department at 330-426-4341 and do not give anyone you do not know your personal information.

Norfolk Southern media representative Connor Spielmaker told 21 News that the company is not randomly calling or going door-to-door with assistance. He said the railroad has set up official ways to help the people of East Palestine, which is through the family assistance program, 1-800-230-7049 or through its return home safely program, 330-849-3919

Norfolk Southern did confirm with 21 News it is offering "inconvenience" funding to residents that were impacted by the derailment, however, that is happening only through its official programs and not door-to-door.

According to the railroad spokesperson, residents receiving its "inconvenience" funding is a one-time payment, which residents do not sign for, and will also get reimbursement for other costs, and access to assistance through its programs, without waving any future litigation rights if needed.
