1998: Mayor George McKelvey says the city paid $1.5 million for outside legal counsel in the past three years, and he wants the law department to cut those expenses by half.
Youngstown's aggressive effort to demolish houses has Mahoning County health officials worried over whether enough is being done to suppress lead-laced dust.
Robert Carillio, a 30-year-old naturalist who lives in Warren, suggests that the city's Riverwalk along the Mahoning River be landscaped with wildflowers and grasses rather than the more traditional tulips and daffodils.

The Rev. Thomas J. McCarthy, assistant pastor of St. Joseph Church in Austintown and former principal of Cardinal Mooney High School, is named pastor of St. William Church in Champion, Trumbull County.
1948: Mahoning County commissioners order Sheriff Ralph Elser to stop accepting prisoners from the Youngstown City Jail because the city has not agreed to pay the county $1.25 per day per prisoner.
Simon L. Leis, a member of the Ohio Liquor Control Board, says the board will support the efforts of Youngstown Mayor Charles Henderson by revoking the permit of any license holder who stays open after hours or on Sunday.
Youngstown City Council votes to adopt Daylight Saving Time this summer.
