Austintown man accused of stealing KIA using USB, rifle found in car

NILES, Ohio - An 18-year-old Austintown man remained jailed on $100,000 bond Tuesday after being arrested for a crime made notorious nationwide by social media platforms like TikTok.
Darnell Jones was captured by Niles Police Saturday evening following a foot chase into a marshy, thorny ravine.
Police say the chase began after they spotted Jones on South Carnegie Avenue standing outside a 2019 Kia Optima reported stolen in Warren.
According to police, the stolen car was detected by Niles’ city-wide Flock camera system.
Officers say a search of the car turned up a loaded firearm that the report described as an "AK".

Police say it appears the alleged thief broke a rear window to get into the car before peeling back the steering column and using a USB plug to turn on the ignition.
Investigators say the method of stealing some Korean-made vehicles is happening all over the country.
A nationwide class action lawsuit is pending in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles alleging that manufacturers intentionally made 2011-2021 Kia models and all Hyundai models from 2015-2021 without engine immobilizers, an electronic security device that make it more difficult to start a vehicle without a key.
“How-to” instructions and videos on how to start the cars without a key have been posted on the internet and social media, leading to a rash of car thefts around the country.

Jones pleaded not guilty to charges of receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, obstructing official business, and falsification during an arraignment in Niles Municipal Court on Monday.
Another hearing is scheduled on Wednesday with a court-appointed attorney.
