If you plan to take advantage of Amazon promotions during Prime Day, buyer beware: as consumer spending is expected to increase around the e-commerce holiday, so is the rate of package theft.

Security.org tells 21 News an estimated 1.7 million packages are lost or stolen daily in the United States and as frequency of deliveries increase around major retail days, thieves find themselves with a plethora of "easy targets."

"Based on our research, we would expect at least a 40 percent increase in package theft the week following Prime Day," says Corie Wagner, research analyst at security.org.

The Youngstown Police Department confirms similar trends of theft locally. Captain Jason Simon notes that cases of packages theft are reported in the city nearly every week, and increase most around holidays and Amazon Prime Days.

Fortunately for consumers, there are multiple ways to deter or reduce the chances of "porch pirates" showing up at your door.

Captain Simon suggests turning on delivery notifications for any orders, as Amazon delivery drivers provide up-to-date tracking information and photo evidence of delivery. Simon adds if you know you're not going to be home at the time of standard delivery, you can schedule another date, or change the delivery address to a that of a friend or family member who is willing to intercept the package for you.

Additionally, security.org recommends installing a personal security system, such as a doorbell camera.

"Ironically, Prime Day is a great time to purchase a security system if you don't already have one, as they are often included in Amazon promotions," Wagner says.
