Jeff Olsen, 40, and Deborah Miekle, 43, are killed when their motorcycle left the road and struck a utility pole on Hendricks Road in Austintown.

1983: Members of Local 4300, Communications Workers of America, picket Ohio Bell's Youngstown office at Phelps and Rayen Avenue after the 675,000 employees strike AT&T for the second time in 12 years.
The Mahoning-Shenango Kennel Club attracted 1,300 dogs, their owners, and handlers to the 45th annual dog show at the Canfield Fairgrounds. A schnauzer won top honors. Nancy Hritzo of Liberty was named the show's best young handler.
James R. Soda, owner, and operator of the construction company that bore his name for 40 years, dies in South Side Hospital after a brief illness at the age of 69.
1973: The 22-year-old Louisiana mother of a baby found in the toilet of a United Airlines plane at Youngstown Municipal Airport is given probation by a federal judge in Cleveland after being found guilty of attempting manslaughter aboard an aircraft.

In a rarity, two Youngstown area gridders are selected captains of the North squad in the 28th annual Ohio High School All-Star Game at Fawcett Stadium in Canton: John Pelusi of Youngstown Chaney and Ross Browner of Warren Western Reserve. 1948: Paul J. Reagan, Trumbull County prosecutor, dies suddenly of a heart attack at his Girard home.
Five children, three from Columbiana County and two from Trumbull County are being treated for polio at St. Elizabeth Hospital. None is in serious condition.
