It was one of the first of its kind in the Valley.

A DORA, otherwise known as a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area where you can drink alcohol outside, has been permitted on Columbiana's Main Street since 2019 for special events. Now, they're thinking about getting a second one. The city and businesses affected say this would only help Columbiana grow and bring in more visitors to the area.

The city is looking to put a second DORA in and around Firestone Farms in an effort to make it an even bigger visitor spot.

"If it's a DORA, then they would be able to allow people that were in their premises to walk outside," explained Mark Hutson, Attorney for the City of Columbiana.

The DORAs could go to Firestone farm's Towncentre, Red Brick Commons, and neighboring 1880 Barn and Vagabond Village. Council mentioned some concerns about the concept including the use of business parking lots, potential noise disturbances, and if it's overreaching to also extend south of State Route 14.

"We know that there's going to be some expansion out there so we wanted to incorporate the vision that council has," said Lance Willard to 21 News. "We probably wouldn't have one event that would cross the road. So, we would have one event at the part of the DORA and then we would have a separate event on the other side of that."

Many businesses within the Red Brick Commons including the owners of Sabi's told 21 News this will only benefit their business and bring in even more people to the City of Columbiana.

"I think it would be great for all of the restaurants out here,' said Kristen Chomczyk, Owner of Sabi's. "We're all locally owned and just all of the events they put on, they have the free concert series, they have the free movie night."

With several vacant lots around the Red Brick Commons complex, the council agrees the DORA will allow Columbiana to prosper even more.

"We have lots of people coming in behind us as well as another plaza that's set to come in this way as well," Chomczyk said. "And the more restaurants, the more businesses out this way, it would only benefit all of us."

The council expects to vote on the DORA concept sometime this year.

A DORA event was also approved for the City's Witches Walk on Main that will take place on Main Street the first weekend of October.
