1998: James R. Harpster, president, and CEO of Cold Metal Products, announces he will retire in 1984, giving the board time to conduct a national search for his successor.

Carla Mattiussi, who says she was attacked by a dog on Mill Creek Park's East Golf Drive hike and bike trail, says the park should establish a designated area for people to walk their dogs. 

The minor league baseball park that will be built in Niles for the 1999 New York-Penn League season will be named Cafaro Field in honor of the late William Cafaro and his wife, Alyce Cafaro. 

1983: The New Castle School Board will require a long-range study before any school building could be sold, which stalls the proposed sale of the George Washington Junior High.

Senior citizens gather for the 77th Old Timers Day at Cascade Park in New Castle. Among the performers is the Jack Shepp Jazz Band of New Castle, which played only songs that were at least 135 years old. 

About 5,000 workers are affected by a two-shift shutdown of the Lordstown General Motors plant due to a lack of parts.

1973: Violet C. Whitman, clerk of Trumbull County courts, administers the oath of office to John DePietro, who was appointed Domestic Relations-Juvenile Court judge. 

The International Paper Co., which is closing its paper milk carton plant on Crum Road at the end of the month, says it will open a kitchen cabinet facility nearby within a few months. 

The city of Youngstown will ask a federal court to block the Federal Aviation Administration's plan to close its Flight Service Station at Youngstown Municipal Airport. 

1948: Youngstown Mayor Charles P. Henderson tells the newly formed Ohio Association of Municipalities that a proper formula is needed for the distribution of state funds to local government. The formula now favors the state's biggest cities and smallest counties, shortchanging those communities in the middle. 

Negotiations are deadlocked on the third day of talks between Renner and Crystal Top breweries and striking members of the brewery worker union. 

The United Veterans Council housing committee takes an option on 90 acres for a proposed $1 million housing project.
