Earlier in August, 21 News reported on an incident in Brookfield Township where a man along with a dog were stabbed during a fight. Now, the Brookfield Police Department has released more information on the incident.

According to a police report, officers were dispatched to a home on the 700 Block of Grover Avenue shortly before 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 10 in reference to a fight where one party had a knife and allegedly stabbed the other male and a dog.

Upon arrival, police did not see either male nor a dog. Eventually, police found themselves at a home on Boyd Street occupied by a male identified as 58-year-old Kurt Betts.

Betts told police that he had been walking his dog on Wheeler Street when he approached the intersection of Grover Avenue where he noticed the other male identified as 70-year-old Walter Simmons, who was walking two more dogs.

According to the report, Betts told police he had a pocket knife in his hand with the blade opened because he knew Simmons' dogs had tendencies to be aggressive.

Police say Simmons yelled at Betts about the knife and at this point one of Simmons' dogs lunged to attack Betts' dog. The report states that Betts dove in front of the dog to protect him causing Betts to get bit in the left leg.

From there, police say Betts stabbed Simmons' dog with the knife followed by Simmons repeatedly punching Betts in the back of the head. Police say Betts then stabbed Simmons in the chest with the knife while Simmons continued to punch him.

Police say after the fight, Simmons followed Betts home. Officers verified this with a construction worker according to the report.

Police then went to Sharon Regional Medical Center to speak with Simmons who told officers his dogs are not aggressive, but just get excited and said he was trying to explain this to Betts.

According to police further questioning revealed that the first thing Simmons said to Betts was that he was going to "shove that knife up his [expletive]."

Police say Simmons alleged that months prior to this incident, Betts threatened his life. He did not go into detail about this alleged incident.

On Thursday, August 17, police spoke with prosecutors and decided to file charges against both parties. Court records show both Betts and Simmons charged with one count each of felonious assault.
