YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A few hours after the last bell of the first day of in-person classes for Youngstown City School District students, board members, and the teacher's union voted to ratify an agreement between the district and the Youngstown Education Association.

YCSD and the YEA reached a tentative agreement on Saturday afternoon.

The School Board voted to ratify the agreement during a 4:30 p.m. special meeting Monday.

Teachers and other YEA members overwhelmingly voted to accept the agreement just a few hours later, with about 98% voting for it. The final vote was 349-7 in favor of the contract.

The agreement is for a one-year contract that would give teachers a raise, but it's currently unknown what the raise will be.

Saturday's tentative agreement was the result of Friday's negotiations, which did not end until 1 a.m. the following day.

Senator Sherrod Brown acknowledged both sides for coming to an agreement.

"I commend the Youngstown City School Board and Youngstown Education Association for reaching an equitable agreement that honors the Dignity of Work and finally returns students and teachers back where they belong: the classroom," said Brown.
