A Champion man is facing up to 27 years in prison after a tense stand off with police on Sept. 11 2022.

Randy Pence, 40, of Copeland Drive, plead guilty to two counts of first-degree felonious assault.

According to the Trumbull County Court, the plea stems from an incident where Pence assaulted someone with an axe at a home on Meadowbrook Drive in Warren Township.

The victim reportedly suffered a cut to his arm.

When officers responded, he barricaded himself in a shed and threatened to defend himself if they tried to come into it, according to the Trumbull County Court.

After using pepper spray on the front window to the shed, the officers opened the barricaded door. That's when Pence threw a hatched out of the opened door, striking on of the officers, according to police reports.

The officer was not struck by the blade of the hatchet and was not seriously injured.

Pence was eventually arrested after officers tasered him through the broken window of the shed.

Next, he will be sentenced on Nov. 2.
