YOUNGSTOWN - A man accused of killing a four year old Struthers boy appeared in court Wednesday for a pre-trail hearing.

Kimane Bryant is waiting to go before a jury for charges including murder, burglary and robbery in a home invasion.

When the judge asked about the progress on negotiations, the prosecution said the “lines of communication” have been open. No plea deal has been offered to Bryant so far but another suspect in the case, Andre McCoy, reached an agreement in August. McCoy pled guilty to a reduced charge of one count of murder after facing four counts of aggravated murder and one count of attempted murder.

Bryant, McCoy and another man, Brandon Crump are accused of breaking into a Struthers home in September of 2020. Four adults were shot and Mahoning County Prosecutor Paul Gains previously told 21 News reporters that Bryant was believed to be the shooter. Additionally, a four-year-old boy, Rowan Sweeny, was shot twice in the head and killed while in his mother's arms. Investigators have not said if Bryant was the one who shot Sweeney.

Bryant is facing four counts of aggravated murder, four counts of attempted murder, four counts of felonious assault, one count of aggravated burglary, and one count of aggravated robbery.

Bryant's attorney said there may be a motion to suppress search warrants in the case to come in the future. The judge set a deadline for any motions to be submitted by Nov. 1.

His trial is set for January.
