Beaver Township man accused of trying to run down police officer

BEAVER TWP., Ohio - A Beaver Township man spent a long weekend in jail after police say he tried to run down one of their officers with his car.
Thirty-three-year-old Andrew Irwin is charged with felonious assault, resisting arrest, failing to comply with a police order, driving without a valid license, speeding, reckless operation, and running a red light.
It was early Saturday evening when an officer on patrol began chasing a car said to be traveling 63 miles per hour in a 35-mph zone along East Western Reserve Road.
Police say the car didn’t stop until it was caught in heavy traffic near Market Street.
That’s when another officer pulled up and got out of his cruiser to approach the suspect.
According to police, Irwin drove his car over the center line toward the officer who jumped away. The report says Irwin’s car just missed the officer by one foot.
Police say when a third officer blocked Western Reserve Road near Hitchcock Road, Irwin swerved into a driveway, abandoning the car near a house and began running through yards.
The officer who was almost struck by the car was the first to catch up with Irwin and began to fight with him, according to the report.
A second officer used a Taser on Irwin before joining the struggle to place him in handcuffs.
Police say it took all three officers to restrain Irwin, and a second shock with the Taser to get him into a police cruiser.
Irwin remained jailed awaiting a Tuesday afternoon hearing in County Court.
