A suspect charged in connection with the death of an Alliance, Ohio fisherman on Lake Erie is being held in the Mahoning County jail awaiting proceedings in federal court.

Alen Gorishti, 34, was booked into the local jail on Tuesday after being arrested in January for a boating incident that resulted in the death of Roger Burton.

Authorities say that on November 6, 2016, a vessel operated by Gorishti collided with another boat that was anchored approximately 2 miles off the coast of Fairport Harbor, Ohio.

Burton and a male relative were aboard the second boat at the time of the collision. The impact sent both men into the waters of Lake Erie.

The survivor was found clinging to the boat by USCG Station in Fairport Harbor. Burton’s body was not recovered until January 14, 2017.

U.S. Coast Guard subsequently charged Gorishti on November 3, 2021, with seaman’s manslaughter and false statements in federal court.

U.S. Marshals eventually located Gorishti living in Canada and found that he had recently traveled to Columbia.  During Gorishti’s return flight from Columbia, he stopped in Miami, Florida, and was arrested there.

Gorshti waived extradition procedures in Florida, agreeing to come to Ohio to face charges.
