Youngstown Police and the County Coroner are investigating a shooting on the city’s Westside that left one teenager dead and another wounded.

While investigating the reported shooting just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, officers found the body of a 17-year-old, whose loved ones have identified as  J'Allen Underwood in a car parked along Millet Street near Oakwood Avenue.

An 18-year-old male was found wounded outside the car. Police believe the 18-year-old, who is hospitalized in stable condition, was shot while in the car and tried to get away.

Detectives found several shell casings inside the car and on the street.

"It appears that it was multiple people shooting, multiple people shooting at each other. We located a weapon and casings inside the vehicle." Lieutenant Mohammad Awad said.

According to Awad, gunshots were fired into the vehicle from the outside. The department is following up on possible suspects but has not released that information to the public.

"We have some leads but there is nothing conclusive at this time and nothing we feel comfortable releasing, but we do have some leads on who the suspect may be."

Police have not uncovered the motive behind the shooting.

According to police, a reward is available for tips leading to an arrest and prosecution of whoever fired the shots.

In an emailed response, "Youngstown City School Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor stated, "[YCSD} had counselors from across the district at the school today and will continue to be there until further notice. We believe that we have the right people for now. If we discover that there are additional needs or additional support I am confident that the ESC or any of my other colleagues across the county would be willing to support as well. Those offers have been made in the past. We will continue to monitor and support our scholars and staff."
