1999: Construction of a clock tower in the heart of Poland finally begins after a fund drive raises $50,000.

Diocesan Superintendent Nicholas Wolsonovich says that despite impassioned pleas from families and neighbors, the decision to close St. Dominic School on Youngstown's South Side is final. 

Mahoning County Probate Judge Timothy P. Maloney orders that National City Bank be removed as fiduciary from roughly 160 cases pending in his court. The bank appealed Maloney's order to the 7th District Court of Appeals.

1984: About two-thirds of the 15,666 students in Youngstown public schools receive free or discounted lunches. 

Hubbard City Council President Albert Sauline presents council with a three-part proposal to roll back electric rate increases. 

Second Presbyterian Church of New Castle, Pa., is marking its 100th anniversary 

1974: Winds raging up to 60 mph thunder through the Mahoning Valley, ripping roofs from buildings, shattering plate glass windows, and uprooting trees. 

Ohio Gov. John J. Gilligan released his income tax report showing a 1973 income of $45,875, on which he paid taxes of $11,501.

1949: The Pennsylvania Railroad is switching its entire fleet of steam-switching locomotives in the Youngstown area to 1,000 horsepower Diesel-electric switchers. Fourteen new diesels will replace 20 steam engines. 

The Civil Aeronautics Administration recommends improvements at Youngstown Municipal Airport as the district's main terminal. The agency recommends a helicopter service to shuttle mail from the airport to downtown Youngstown and smaller surrounding towns.  

Henry E. Katchke is named executive director of the Mahoning Valley Council of the Boy Scouts.
