A Newton Township woman has been indicted by a grand jury on animal cruelty charges stemming from the death of her son's dog and cat.

According to a report from the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to a home on King's Drive after receiving a call from a woman, identified as 63-year-old Patricia Johnson that her son's dog and cat had died.

Deputies say Johnson found the dog in the kitchen and the cat in the trash can in the bathroom. Johnson told deputies she did not know how the cat got into the trash can.

Upon arrival, deputies spoke to Johnson who told them she had been taking care of her son's dog and cat ever since he got arrested.

When deputies asked when the last time she saw the animals was, Johnson responded it was a week and a half prior to the incident and the animals were alive and fed the last time she saw them according to the report.

Deputies say Johnson told them the reason she hadn't seen the animals in so long was that she had "business" including getting licenses and registrations transferred to her new address.

According to the report, when Johnson was asked if the dog had been fed since she had last seen it, she said no due to him eating a lot and said she didn't have money for more.

Deputies say when they entered the home, they observed two empty dog bowls, as well as feces and blood covering the kitchen and living room floors. Deputies say the dog appeared to be malnourished and the area around its mouth and eyes was glossed over and dry.

In the bathroom, deputies observed the cat's litter box, which deputies say was filled with dry feces. Deputies observed the cat in a tipped over trash can.

Johnson was placed under arrest and charged with multiple counts of prohibitions concerning companion animals. A four-count indictment was filed against her in court on Thursday, May 2.
