999: The Rev. Tom Jewell, former senior pastor of Central Christian Church in Warren who was on the board of the Trumbull Red Cross when the May 1985 tornado hit here, is helping victims of a 260-mph tornado that struck Oklahoma City, where he now oversees 182 Disciple of Christ congregations.

Warren Mayor Hank Angelo defeats Council President Joe Williams in the Democratic primary and will face independent Marjorie Molnar in November.

Sarah Brown-Clark, a Youngstown State University English professor, defeats Rick Durkin by 297 votes in the Democratic primary for Youngstown clerk of courts.  

1984: Two Youngstown men imprisoned a decade ago for a $6 million bank heist in California, Emil Dinsio and Charles Mulligan, at charged with defrauding insurance companies by falsely reporting their own cars stolen.

All three Democratic presidential candidates, Walter Mondale, Gary Hart, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, will make stops in the Youngstown area before the presidential primary.

Local industrialist H. Alexander Pendleton confirms that his Park South Corp. is on the verge of purchasing the former Strouss building on Warren's Courthouse Square. 

1974: Eleven direct descendants of Nicholas Clemmons, a cook for Gen. George Washington during the Revolutionary War, are among those attending the dedication of a memorial to Clemmons at Lake Park Cemetery.

The tulips at Riverside Gardens are at their peak, making the gardens the most visited place in Youngstown.

A move is underway to encourage major European companies to allocate more of their "foreign investment money" in the Youngstown district. One New York bank is said to control $20 billion in European funds. 

1949: The mercury hits 94 degrees two days in a row at Youngstown Municipal Airport. 

Mayor Charles P. Henderson gets a ride in Youngstown's brand new "paddy wagon."

The Big Four reached an agreement under which Russia will lift its blockade of Berlin by May 12.
