Explosion won't cause cancelation of Saturday's Streetscape event in Youngstown

Plans to have nearly 1,000 volunteers perform landscaping in Downtown Youngstown are still scheduled on Saturday even though several streets remain closed after Tuesday’s explosion at the Realty building.
"We feel now more than ever the community needs to show their love for our city and move forward with this positive community event," Youngstown CityScape said in a news release. "We are hoping that this act of community spirit helps with the healing for all involved."
Before the event begins, a moment of silence and a prayer will be done for Akil Drake, who died in the explosion, and the seven other victims still recovering from their injuries.
Deputy Director of Public Works Chuck Shasho announced during a Wednesday morning news conference that Streetscape activities will not occur in restricted areas.
As of 11 a.m., Wednesday, Market Street and Wick Avenue are closed downtown in both directions. Federal Street has also been shut down, from Phelps to Walnut.
Streetscape will be held this Saturday, June 1st from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in downtown Youngstown.
Volunteers have signed up to assist with landscaping several downtown locations and neighborhoods across the city.
"We understand that for some, this is a way to move forward, to beautify the city," the organization said. "We also understand that some may find they are unable to participate this year and we honor that decision."
