Alliance man dead, woman critical after being struck by Amtrak passenger train in Sebring

The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Mahoning County Coroner are investigating after two people were struck by a train in the Village of Sebring.
Sebring Police contacted the patrol after receiving word from Norfolk Southern Railroad just before 2 a.m. Monday a man and a woman were struck by an Amtrak passenger train near Pennsylvania Avenue between the cross streets of 16th and 17th Streets.
An unidentified female and Michael Lawson, Jr., age 21, of Alliance, Ohio were both struck by the train. Lawson was pronounced dead at the scene. The female is in critical condition at the Summa Hospital in Akron, Ohio.
The female and Lawson were walking next to the tracks before the train was approaching. It appears that they attempted to cross the tracks before the train struck them, the patrol says in a news release. Troopers are working to identify the female.
The tracks in the area were shut down until 4:30 am while the investigation was being conducted.
The train was carrying 136 passengers. None of them were injured.
