The unifying power of the Olympics in the Mahoning Valley
TRUMBULL COUNTY, OH - In recent years the nation has faced consistent political strife and discord. But with the summer Olympics in Paris there's a renewed sense of excitement that's transcending party lines and political debates.
"I think it brings people together and allows people to unite and and have a sense of unity at the same time," Eastwood Mall barber, Sheldon Jackson said.
Local psychiatrist, Dr. Deirdre Adduci told 21 News that sense of unity is rooted in a shared human experience.
"We're on the same team for this and I think no matter what we're doing we put that aside and we look at [the athletes] and we want to raise them up and to raise them up I think [we need to put] any of our biases, those kind of beliefs that divide us, put those in the background," Adduci said.
For the next few weeks, the games are set to provide a much needed respite from divisiveness for Americans and other countries.
21 spoke with people at the Eastwood Mall who say they are looking forward to cheering for team USA and bridging divides to foster a sense of oneness in the country and hopefully around the world.
"It reunites the nation and hopefully it helps to unify our relationships with other countries" Eastwood Mall shopper Ron Lessick said.
