EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been modified to correct Wellsville and Columbiana's ratings.

The Ohio Department of Education has released the annual summary of how school districts performed in the 2023-24 academic year.

The Performance Index rates schools from 5 stars  (the best rating) to 1 star (the lowest rating).

The PI measure uses the performance level results for students in grades 3 through high school on Ohio’s State Tests. The Performance Index score accounts for the level of achievement of every student, not just whether they score a proficient level on the tests. Each test a student takes is assigned an achievement level based on the test score, with higher scores resulting in higher achievement levels. While all achievement levels are included in the Performance Index, higher achievement levels receive larger weights in the calculation.

5 stars: Greater than or equal to 90% of maximum score. Significantly exceeds state standards in academic achievement
4 stars: Greater than or equal to 80% but less than 90% of maximum score. Exceeds state standards in academic achievement
3 stars: Greater than or equal to 70% but less than 80% of maximum score. Meets state standards in academic achievement
2 stars: Greater than or equal to 50% but less than 70% of maximum score. Needs support to meet state standards in academic achievement
1 star: Less than 50% of maximum score. Needs significant support to meet state standards in academic achievement

Schools are evaluated on five components: Achievement, Gap Closing, Early Literacy, Progress and Graduation. The following is a breakdown of each component and what they mean.

- Achievement: Represents whether students' performances on state tests met established thresholds and how well students performed on tests overall

- Gap Closing: Measures multiple indicators including Gifted Performance, Chronic Absenteeism, English Language Proficiency Improvement, Graduation Goals by Student, English, Language Arts and Math Achievement and English, Language Arts and Math Progress.

- Early Literacy: Measures reading improvement and proficiency for students in kindergarten through third grade and includes three different measures including Proficiency in Third Grade Reading, Promotion to Fourth Grade and Improving K-3 Literacy. These measures are combined to create a single rating for Early Literacy.

- Progress: Measures two components including Growth Index, a measure of statistical certainty and Effect Size to indicate the academic growth of the district or school in relation to the state as a whole.

- Graduation Rate: Measures two components: the four-year and five-year graduation dates and multiplies them by the weights established in state law to create a weighted graduation rate. The four-year rate is weighed at 60% and five-year is weighed at 40%.
