Putt-Putt, Batting Cages to close after decades of operation in Warren
The owners of Putt-Putt of Warren and the adjacent Warren Batting Cages along Route 422 have announced plans to close next year.
Roberta Cykon said in a Facebook post that her husband Michael’s increasing age and burnout from the demanding seasonal nature of the businesses were significant contributors to their decision. Roberta, pursuing a career in social work, put her ambitions on hold to manage the Putt-Putt while caring for her mother.
With the COVID-19 pandemic further straining operations, staffing difficulties and financial constraints became more severe. The Cykons emphasized their commitment to keeping prices affordable, particularly for families, which ultimately impacted profitability.
"Our decision has been challenging," said Roberta Cykon. "We understand this news may be disappointing, and for that, we are truly sorry. We invested a significant amount of time and sought professional guidance before reaching this conclusion."
The closures coincide with the expiration of the Putt-Putt franchise agreement. The Cykons deemed further investment unnecessary due to their planned retirement. The property housing both businesses has already been sold.
Tom Cykon, Michael's father, is also retiring at the age of 85 after 47 years of operating the Warren Batting Cages. The family expressed their gratitude to the Warren community for their loyal patronage over the years.
While not seeking offers for the businesses, the Cykons are open to selling equipment from the batting cages. Interested parties can contact Roberta Cykon at [email protected].
The Putt-Putt of Warren, established in 1962, was known as the oldest authentic Putt-Putt course remaining in Ohio. The Warren Batting Cages, operating since 1978, offered a recreational activity for generations of locals.
Cykon said the future of the property will be under the control of Klaben Ford of Warren sometime in January 2025.
